The Scout BSA advancement system consists of seven ranks. These ranks are Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life and Eagle. The goal of the Trail to First Class program is to have new scouts in their first year of scouting to work through the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class and by the end of their first scouting year achieve the rank of First Class. It has been shown that scouts who earned First Class are more likely to stay in Scouting. Upon completing First Class, they continue to earn the Star, Life, and the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle.
