These 2021 scholarships are the first awards given in the Council since 2012. Of the 23 Scouts recognized, twelve received awards of $750, six were awarded $1,500 and the Top-5 awardees each received $3,500. The recipients will also be recognized at the annual Council Volunteer Recognition Celebration, set for April 22, 2021.
The partnership between the Hovnanian Family and Scouting in South Jersey is long-standing and impactful.
In 1948, Jirair S. Hovnanian and his family immigrated to the U.S. in search of finding the American Dream. Through years of hard work, dedication, and adherence to a strict code of ethics and morals, Mr. Hovnanian and his family realized that dream.
As the founder of J.S. Hovnanian & Sons, one of the area’s largest builders of quality new homes, Mr. Hovnanian felt a desire to give back to the community. He believed strongly in Scouting’s mission, and in 1987, Jirair S. Hovnanian was recognized as Burlington County’s First Distinguished Citizen. In 1998, in celebration of his 50th-year as an American citizen, Mr. Hovnanian created the Hovnanian Scholarship Fund.
The purpose of the Hovnanian Scholarship Fund is to award scholarships to high school seniors, who are registered members of the Garden State Council, BSA, to assist young people in the pursuit of their American Dream.
The Garden State Council has worked with the Hovnanian Family over the past year to restart this scholarship and invites each year’s new crop of high school seniors to apply. Learn more and find the application here: https://www.gardenstatescouting.org/scholarships.
The deadline to receive applications for the 2021-2022 school year will be February 1, 2022.
