National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

NYLT is the BSA's premier week-long outdoor leadership experience for Scouts who are ready to take their skills to the next level. In the Garden State Council, NYLT is led by South Jersey's finest youth staff and designed to reflect "one month in the life of your unit"—all within a safe, Scout-friendly environment.

From hands-on leadership challenges to real-world problem solving, Scouts leave NYLT better equipped to lead in their unit, their school, and their life.

Who Should Attend?

NYLT is for Scouts who are ready to lead. It is the right fit for anyone who:

  • Currently holds or is planning to take on a unit leadership position.
  • Wants to sharpen their leadership and critical thinking skills.
  • Is committed to becoming a better citizen at home, in their troop, and in their community.

Requirements to Attend

  • Youth must be at least 14 years old at the start of the course.
  • Must have achieved First Class rank by the start of the course (Scouts BSA only)
  • Lives by the Scout Oath and Law
  • Has a foundation in basic outdoor skills including cooking, fire building, and knots/lashings?
  • Is willing to bring NYLT skills back and apply them in their home unit.
  • Has a recommendation from their Unit Leader.
  • Completed Introduction to Leadership Skills (ILS) training.

What to Expect

NYLT goes beyond the campfire. Scouts who attend will develop real leadership capabilities through immersive, hands-on training covering the skills essential to leading a unit, a team, and a community. The experience is structured, challenging, and rewarding—and the lessons last long after the week is over.

Scouts who attend the NYLT Leadership Academy hone their presentation and evaluation skills, meet successful leaders, participate in problem-solving panels, and learn best practices from peers and mentors across the country.

Take It Further:

The NYLT Leadership Academy

NYLT graduates can take their training to the national level through the NYLT Leadership Academy, a program designed to develop outstanding presenters, evaluators, and model leaders ready to serve their communities, their nation, and the world. Participants can even earn college credit through West Virginia University for their time at the Leadership Academy.

What Scouts Are Saying

The NYLT Leadership Academy is truly a special place. From my first moments at camp, I was immediately welcomed with open arms. The environment is perfect for learning and growing your leadership skills. I would absolutely do it all over again.

It goes down in my books as one of the most rewarding and fun experiences of my Scouting career.
