Position Specific Training

Cub Scout position-specific training is designed for Den Leaders, Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters, and Pack Committee members and Committee Chairs. Leaders who complete either the online or facilitated training are considered trained for their position. 

Want to add a camping component to your Pack's program? BALOO is a one-and-a-half-day course designed as a practical introduction to the Cub Scout outdoor experience. It includes an online prerequisite component followed by an overnight practical offered through your District or Council. At least one adult on any Pack overnighter must have completed BALOO—it is a BSA requirement.

Scouts BSA position-specific training is designed for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, and Troop Committee Chairs.

Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained upon completing both their online or facilitated position-specific training and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS). All other positions are considered trained upon completing the online or facilitated training alone. Facilitated training is available through your District or Council.

IOLS is a hands-on course where leaders work together in patrols to build the practical outdoor skills needed to lead Scouts in the field. Upon completion, leaders should feel confident teaching the basic skills required for First Class rank. IOLS is required for all direct-contact leaders in Scouts BSA Troops to be considered trained.

Venturing position-specific training is designed for Crew Advisors and Associate Advisors, Merit Badge Counselors, Crew Committee members and Committee Chairs, and Crew Board of Review members. Leaders who complete online or facilitated training are considered trained for their positions.

Designed specifically for Crew Committee members, the Crew Committee Challenge serves as the position-specific training course—alongside the Venturing version of Safeguarding Youth Training—needed to be considered trained. It is available through your District or Council.

Sea Scout leader training is available both online and through facilitated sessions offered by your District or Council. Leaders who complete either option are considered trained for their positions.

This learning track replaces the former District Committee Workshop and provides role-aligned training plans for all District Committee positions. Positions covered include District Committee Chair and Vice Chair, Membership Chair, Fund Development, Training Chair, Activities and Civic Service Chair, Nominating Chair, Program Chair, Camping and Outdoor Chair, Advancement Chair, and Member at Large.

Completing your position's learning plan earns you trained status. This training is available online only — there is no facilitated option.
