Become a Merit Badge Counselor

Sharing your skills can make a lasting impact. Merit Badge Counselors help Scouts explore new interests, build confidence, and gain real-world knowledge.

To become a Merit Badge Counselor in Garden State Council complete the following:

1. BSA Adult Application
2. Background Check Authorization form (from the BSA Adult Application)
3. Merit Badge Counselor Information Form

Add These Required Attachments:

1. Proof of completion of Youth Protection Training (e.g. a copy of the completion certificate from my.scouting.org)
2. Proof of completion of Merit Badge Counselor training (available online at my.scouting.org)
3. Any required specialty certifications, if applicable (examples include Archery, Canoeing, Climbing, Kayaking, Lifesaving, Rifle Shooting, Scuba Diving, Swimming, and others)

Submit all materials by email to 690MBC@scouting.org or deliver them to the Council office at: 693 Rancocas Rd., Westampton, NJ 08060.

After your materials are submitted:

• You will be contacted by your District’s Dean of Merit Badges for a brief interview 
• Processing typically takes 8 to 10 business days, assuming all materials are complete
• You will receive email updates through Scoutbook+ as your counselor status and badge list are approved

You can log into Scoutbook+ to confirm your registration and view your approved badges.

Merit Badge Counselor training is available:

• Online through training.scouting.org 
• Occasionally in person through council training opportunities 

The online course takes about 40 minutes and may overlap with other leadership training modules you have already completed.

If you are already a counselor and want to add or remove badges:

• Submit an updated Merit Badge Counselor Information Form 
• Send it to 690MBC@scouting.org, or the Council office

You do not need to resubmit the full application or training documentation when making updates. Registration is renewed annually for counselors with current training and certifications.
